Objective of the position
- To serve as the technical authority and competent person for the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), ensuring stable, optimized and compliant operation,
- To ensure proper management of sludge and related scheduled waste, in PGD Site in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Safeguard site Watergate 3 & 4 discharges by ensuring only compliant effluent is released and promptly addressing any abnormal conditions.

ain Areas of Responsibilities and Key Activities
- Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS)
- Follow all EHS procedures, work instructions, and permit requirements.
- Utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Support spill response, emergency preparedness, and waste-related incident investigations.
- Promote safe work practices and environmental awareness across the site.
- WWTP Process Ownership & Optimization
- Own the overall performance and stability of the WWTP, including biological, chemical and physical treatment processes.
- Monitor, analyse and interpret process and laboratory data (e.g. COD, BOD, TSS, TN, NH3, pH, flow, MLSS and sludge characteristics) to optimize treatment performance, identify trends or deviations, and support proactive measures to prevent process failures.
- Establish operating limits, control strategies and performance benchmarks, and implement process improvement initiatives to enhance plant reliability and efficiency.
- Act as the Competent Person for the WWTP and ensure final effluent discharge complies with DOE standards and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure compliance with Scheduled Waste Regulations related to WWTP operations, including sludge handling and disposal activities.
- Maintain and verify the integrity, accuracy and completeness of process data, regulatory records and documentation, including effluent and sludge reports.
- Assist in troubleshooting process upsets, treatment inefficiencies and abnormal operating conditions.
- Act as the area owner for WWTP equipment and monitoring instruments, ensuring operational readiness, reliability and calibration compliance.
- Monitor equipment performance, identify recurring issues, coordinate corrective actions with the Maintenance team, and support predictive and preventive maintenance programs.
- Sludge & Scheduled Waste Management Optimization
- Manage sludge generation, dewatering, handling and disposal activities arising from WWTP operations.
- Ensure proper classification of sludge and scheduled waste in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate the storage, handling, collection and disposal of scheduled waste in compliance with regulatory and company requirements.
- Support initiatives to optimize sludge reduction and disposal efficiency.
- Maintain accurate sludge and scheduled waste inventories, records, logbooks and regulatory reporting.
- Coordinate with licensed contractors for scheduled waste collection and disposal activities.
- Monitor and inspect scheduled waste storage areas to ensure compliance with regulatory and safety requirements.
- Ensure proper segregation, labelling, storage and safe handling of scheduled waste.
- Identify, report and follow up on any non-compliance or safety concerns related to sludge and scheduled waste management.
- Watergate Controls
- Control water gate releases based on the assessment of drainage water conditions, including COD and pH parameters.
- Report any abnormal drainage conditions that may result in non-compliance with DOE requirements.
- Others
- Provide technical oversight for contractors involved in WWTP operation and maintenance.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders (Production, EHS, and Maintenance).
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and the sharing of best practices.
- Participate in internal and external audits and inspections.
- Perform any other ad hoc tasks and projects as assigned by management.
Job Requirements
- Minimum Diploma in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Occupational Safety & Health, or related disciplines.
- 1–5 years of experience in scheduled waste management, environmental operations, or EHS-related functions.
- Experience in a manufacturing or chemical industry environment is preferred.
- Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems Physical- Chemical Processes (CePIETSO-PCP)
- Certified Environmental Professional in the Operation of Industrial Effluent Treatment Systems Biological Processes (CePIETSO-BP)
- Certified Environmental Professional Course in Scheduled Waste Management (CePSWaM)
- Strong knowledge of industrial wastewater treatment processes, including biological (activated sludge, nitrification/denitrification), chemical and physical treatment systems
- Good understanding of process control principles and parameter optimization (e.g. COD, BOD, TSS, TN, NH3, pH, flow, MLSS)
- Ability to analyze, interpret and apply laboratory and operational data for process optimization and troubleshooting
- Good knowledge of sludge treatment, dewatering and handling processes, including characteristics, performance factors and optimization approaches
- Understanding of scheduled waste classification and regulatory requirements related to WWTP sludge management
