Your role and responsibilities
In this role, you will execute service and engineering activities related to protection relays and electrical systems of low to medium complexity, in accordance with ABB standards, safety guidelines, and quality requirements.
You will be responsible for commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of relay protection systems, ensuring reliable and efficient operation of electrical networks. The role requires close coordination with customers and internal teams to deliver first-time-right service solutions.
The work model for the role is: Hybrid #LI-Hybrid, Onsite #LI-Onsite
This role is contributing to the Industrial Automation Energy Industries Business based at Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
You will be mainly accountable for:

Field Service & Technical Execution: Installing, testing, commissioning, and maintaining protection relays and associated LV/MV switchgear systems in compliance with ABB processes, safety standards, and quality requirements.

Protection Relay Engineering: Configuring and testing protection relays (feeder protection, differential, overcurrent, distance) with a first-time-right approach to ensure accurate and efficient execution.

Performing relay settings calculation, verification, and implementation based on system requirements and protection scheme specifications.

Analyzing disturbance records, event logs, and fault data to evaluate system performance and identify areas for optimization.

Supporting SCADA/DCS/IEC 61850 integration to ensure seamless communication and interoperability of protection relay systems.

Troubleshooting & Fault Analysis: Diagnosing relay and electrical system failures using on-site or remote diagnostic tools; identifying root causes, recommending preventive actions, and supporting fault investigations related to protection mis-operations.

Customer Support & Improvements: Collaborating with customers on-site to resolve technical issues, improving system reliability, enhancing protection schemes, and providing recommendations for upgrades or modifications.

Compliance & Safety: Preparing method statements, test procedures, service reports, and material/spare parts lists while conducting proper risk assessments and maintaining strict HSE compliance when working on energized electrical systems.
Qualifications for the role
-
Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent discipline, with a minimum of 5-8 years of hands-on experience in protection relay systems and LV/MV switchgear service and maintenance.

Proven experience in commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of protection relay and electrical systems; exposure to Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, or Power Generation environments is an advantage.

Strong knowledge of protection schemes; overcurrent, differential, distance, and busbar, combined with a solid understanding of switchgear operation, interlocking systems, and power system fault analysis.

Proficiency with relay configuration tools such as PCM600, MiCOM S1, EnerVista, or equivalent, with familiarity in IEC 61850 communication protocols and SCADA/DCS integration.

Ability to read and interpret Single Line Diagrams (SLD), protection schematics, and wiring diagrams accurately.

Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, including to onshore and offshore facilities as required.

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills combined with good communication and customer-facing abilities, demonstrating a proactive, organized approach and the capability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
