Farm Operations Manager

We are a Greenhouse Hydroponic Farm. The Farm Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of hydroponic farming within a controlled greenhouse environment. This role includes managing crop production, supervising farm staff, maintaining hydroponic systems and equipment, and ensuring that all operational processes are efficient, sustainable, and compliant with industry standards. The manager will focus on optimizing plant growth conditions, reducing costs, and increasing yield in the greenhouse setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Greenhouse and Hydroponic System Management:
- Oversee the day-to-day operation and maintenance of hydroponic systems within the greenhouse, including nutrient delivery, irrigation, and climate control (temperature, humidity).
- Regularly monitor water level, nutrient concentration, and environmental conditions to optimize plant health and yield.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any issues with hydroponic systems (e.g., pumps, filters, irrigation systems) to minimize downtime and ensure smooth operations.
- Crop and Production Management:
- Plan, monitor, and manage the growth cycles of crops ensuring optimal yields, quality, and harvest timing.
- Implement crop rotation schedules and manage planting, pruning, and harvesting processes.
- Ensure that crops are grown according to established protocols and standards for quality, safety, and environmental sustainability.
- Staff Supervision and Training:
- Manage and supervise greenhouse staff, including assigning tasks, providing training on hydroponic farming techniques, and ensuring adherence to safety and operational procedures.
- Foster a positive work environment by promoting teamwork, safety, and effective communication.
- Resource and Inventory Management:
- Oversee the inventory of seeds, growing mediums, nutrients, and other essential supplies for the hydroponic system.
- Optimize resource usage, including water, energy, and nutrients, to minimize waste and reduce operating costs.
- Environmental and Facility Control:
- Ensure the greenhouse environment is properly controlled, including regulating temperature, and humidity.
- Monitor and adjust the greenhouse climate to prevent pests, diseases, and unfavorable growing conditions.
- Ensure cleanliness and sanitation standards are maintained within the greenhouse to protect crops.
- Data Collection, Monitoring, and Reporting:
- Collect and analyze data on crop growth, environmental conditions, and hydroponic system performance.
- Track key performance indicators (KPIs), such as yield, plant health, energy consumption, and resource use efficiency.
- Prepare regular reports on farm performance, production costs, and any operational challenges or successes.
- Use data-driven insights to optimize production, improve crop outcomes, and implement best practices.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure the greenhouse farm operates in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including food safety, environmental impact, and labor laws.
- Implement safety protocols to prevent accidents, ensure proper handling of equipment and chemicals, and promote a safe working environment.
- Stay up-to-date on industry trends, regulatory changes, and sustainability practices relevant to hydroponic farming.
- Continuous Improvement and Innovation:
- Explore and implement new technologies, farming techniques, or sustainable practices to improve crop production, reduce costs, and increase overall farm efficiency.
- Stay informed about advancements in hydroponic farming, greenhouse design, and automation systems, and incorporate these into operations as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Environmental Science, or a related field (preferred).
- 3+ years of experience in hydroponic farming or controlled environment agriculture (CEA), preferably in a greenhouse setting.
- Strong understanding of hydroponic systems, crop production, and greenhouse management.
- Familiarity with greenhouse climate control systems, nutrient management, and pest/disease control techniques.
- Experience with automation tools, environmental monitoring systems, and data analysis software is a plus.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in a controlled indoor greenhouse environment with varying temperatures and humidity levels.
- Ability to perform several physical tasks in relation to daily farm activities.
- Comfortable working with technology and machinery.
Working Conditions: Full-time position, typically on-site in a greenhouse.
- Regular working hours, but flexibility may be required depending on crop cycles and peak harvest periods.
- Occasional overtime during peak harvest or maintenance periods.
Salary: Negotiable depending on level of experience and expertise.
