Job Requirements of a Mechanical Technician

Educational Qualifications:

• Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field.
• Vocational training or certification in mechanical systems or machinery maintenance is often preferred.

Experience:

• 1-3 years of experience in a similar role or as a mechanical apprentice.
• Hands-on experience with mechanical systems, machines, and tools.

Technical Skills:

• Proficiency in reading and interpreting mechanical blueprints and technical drawings.
• Knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and general machine mechanics.
• Competence in using diagnostic tools, precision measuring instruments, and hand/power tools.
• Basic knowledge of welding, plumbing, and electrical systems is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in physically demanding environments.
• Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination.
• Willingness to work in confined spaces or at heights if necessary.

Soft Skills:

• Strong problem-solving abilities and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication skills for collaboration with team members and reporting issues.
• Attention to detail to ensure precise work and adherence to standards.

Certifications (Optional):

• Certification in Mechanical Maintenance or Industrial Maintenance (e.g., CMRT - Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician).
• OSHA or other safety-related certifications are advantageous.

Availability:

• Willingness to work flexible hours, including night shifts, weekends, or being on-call in case of emergencies.

Job Description of a Mechanical Technician

Maintenance & Repair:

• Perform routine maintenance and inspections on mechanical systems and equipment.
• Repair mechanical components such as motors, pumps, valves, gearboxes, compressors, and engines.

Installation:

• Assemble and install new machinery and mechanical systems according to specifications.
• Align and adjust parts for proper fit and operation.

Troubleshooting:

• Diagnose mechanical issues using diagnostic tools, manuals, or personal knowledge.
• Identify faulty equipment or systems and determine the appropriate repair methods.

Fabrication & Modification:

• Fabricate or modify mechanical parts using hand and power tools or welding equipment when needed.
• Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.

Testing & Calibration:

• Test equipment and ensure optimal functioning after repair or maintenance.
• Calibrate equipment as needed to meet operational standards.

Documentation & Reporting:

• Maintain records of all maintenance, repairs, and inspections performed.
• Provide feedback and reports on recurring equipment issues and improvements needed.

Safety Compliance:

• Adhere to safety standards and procedures while handling mechanical equipment.
• Conduct safety checks to ensure that equipment is running safely.

Collaboration:

• Work with other engineers and technical staff to ensure smooth operation of mechanical systems.
• Assist in training new technicians or apprentices.
